For Australia, this creates a dangerous contradiction.

We are deeply dependent on imported refined fuels

Our defence force lacks the personnel depth to sustain prolonged operations

I just wish that you would explain the apparent threat in terms that make sense to me. It appears to me that the only potential threat to Australia arises from our alliance with a bellicose, exuberant USA which is an empire looking for a brawl.
Replacing that connection with a regional SE Asia / Australasia / NZ / Pacific alliance and basing that alliance on neutrality with respect to global conflict would have to be a safer, cheaper, less aggressive solution.
